Before the CHKM…
In 2005, the first Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon came into being and immediately became the flagship event of the Knoxville Track Club. Thus, those who are relatively recent members may not recall the days when the Expo 10,000 race – which did not add the 5k until 1995 – was the premier road race, not only in Knoxville, but in all of East Tennessee. Registration numbers exceeded not just 1000 but 2000 some of those years, and many of the area’s most serious runners trained to peak for Expo.
Thus, the club deigned to publish a separate Expo brochure celebrating the race and its partnership with the Knoxville News-Sentinel – for many years our sponsor and partner in this grand event. Links to many of those brochures appear below.
On top of that, the Covenant Marathon was not KTC’s first venture into the 26.2 mile distance. For many years the club put on a small but highly acclaimed marathon headquartered in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains in Townsend. Runners traveled from surrounding states to test themselves on the backroads of East Tennessee (some of which still exist as part of our Townsend 15k – known until recently as the Wears Valley 15k.) Links to similar commemorative brochures also appear below.
Any club members who have brochures not linked here, please contact KTC at webmaster@ktc.org for inclusion.
